Approved by Hunan Provincial People’s Government and put on record by the Ministry of Education, Yongzhou Vocational and Technical College was upgraded by merging former Lingling Health School and former Lingling Agricultural School in July, 2000. Under the authorization of Hunan Provincial People’s Government, three specialized secondary schools including Lingling Business School, Lingling Normal School, Lingling Technical School were reconstructed into Yongzhou Vocational and Technical College in June, 2003 to integrate Yongzhou’s educational resources.

The college occupies a total area of 3362 mu, with its school buildings covering 470,000 square meters. The total value of its fixed assets reaches more than 1.1 billion yuan, among which the value of instrument and equipment amounts to 160 million yuan and the school library boasts a total collection of over 900000 books. It has a faculty of 941, of which 64 are professors, 254 are associate professors and 316 hold a master degree and above. In terms of full-time teachers, the percentage of double-qualified teachers represents 82%. The college has offered 35 higher vocational specialties and enrolled students from 27 provinces with the number of full-time students totaling 18,000. At present, the college has 1 national teaching team, 3 provincial teaching teams, 2 national curriculum reform pilot specialties, 6 national key specialties, 8 provincial excellent specialties and curriculum reform pilot specialties, 2 provincial demonstration characteristic specialties, 2 provincial characteristic specialties, 1 provincial demonstration characteristic specialty group and 3 provincial top-class characteristic specialty groups. It has also established 3 national vocational education training bases, 2 provincial production practice training bases, 2 provincial teacher training and certification bases and 3 major in-school production practice bases including affiliated hospital, ecological cultivation farm and Changtong driving school.

Ever since its founding, the College has adhered to the orientation of “based in Yongzhou, serving agriculture, rural areas and farmers”, dedicated to the cultivation of specialized applied talents with high quality and high skills for the local economic and social development. It has pioneered a new path “in pursuit of support and development through services and contributions”, and it has formed distinctive features of school-running and achieved outstanding performances. The College has successively owned numerous honors including National Advanced Unit of Vocational Education, National Excellent College of Higher Vocational Education, the First Prize of National Teaching Achievement, Civilized College in Hunan, Advanced Unit of Vocational Education in Hunan, Advanced Unit for Employment of Hunan Provincial Colleges and Universities, Excellent Unit for “One of the Top” Employment Project of Hunan Provincial Colleges and Universities, Advanced College of Party Construction of Hunan Provincial Colleges and Universities, Excellent Unit of Students’ Ideological and Political Work of Hunan Provincial Colleges and Universities, Advanced Unit of Mental Health Education for College Students in Hunan, Excellent College in the First Huang Yanpei Vocational Education Award in Hunan, Advanced Unit of Party Culture and Integrity Construction of Hunan Provincial Colleges and Universities, Advanced Collective in the Management of Student Status and Academic Qualifications of National Colleges and Universities, Advanced Collective of Greening Work in Hunan, Advanced Collective of Logistics of Hunan Provincial Colleges and Universities, and so on. In October, 2010, the College successfully passed the national inspection and acceptance and was confirmed as the National Model Higher Vocational College.
